Where to Rent a Car or Motorbike in San Andrés | Prices, Options & Tips
If you’re planning a trip to San Andrés or you’re already on the island and want to move around freely, renting a car, scooter or “mulita” is one of the best ways to explore the island at your own pace.
In this guide, I’ll explain where to book, how much it costs, which type of vehicle to choose, and most importantly, how to avoid scams or inflated prices, which are common during high season.
What types of vehicles can you rent in San Andrés?
In San Andrés, you’ll mainly find two options:
- Mulitas (golf-cart style vehicles):
These are the most popular vehicles on the island. Perfect for couples or small groups, easy to drive, and ideal for exploring San Andrés comfortably under the island’s tropical weather.
- Scooters / Motorbikes:
This is the cheapest option, especially if you’re traveling alone or as a couple. However, I don’t recommend them if you’re looking for comfort and safety:- The heat can be extremely intense.
- Traffic can be chaotic.
- You won’t receive a helmet, since wearing one is not mandatory on the island.
Where to rent a mulita or scooter in San Andrés?
Although the island is small, public transportation is limited, with buses every 20–30 minutes and rides that can take more than an hour.
This is why renting a vehicle is the best option if you want to explore the entire island.
Here are some reliable rental options:
-
Alquiler Speed Racer ⭐️
Excellent value for money and a good variety of mulitas. The owner is very kind and honest. They only rent mulitas.
-
Chemas Scooter
Great Google reviews, good service, and competitive prices.
-
MOTOS SAI | Motorcycle Rental San Andrés
Fair prices and friendly staff. We didn’t rent with them because they requested a Colombian driver’s license (despite having international and European licenses).
Tip: Most small businesses don’t have an official website. It’s normal to book through WhatsApp and pay in person. Just avoid sending money in advance.
How much does it cost to rent a mulita or scooter in San Andrés?
Prices depend on the type of vehicle, season, and engine size. Compared to Asia, it may feel expensive, but for comfort and freedom, it’s totally worth it.
👉 Important: Rentals in San Andrés are not for 24 hours, but for a daytime period (8:00 to 18:00).
This is because driving at night is not recommended, and most companies require the vehicle to be returned before sunset.

The best mulita rental in San Andrés
We stayed 4 days in San Andrés and rented a mulita for one full day. It was enough to tour the island, but if you want to explore all the beaches without rushing, two days is ideal.
After comparing several options, we chose Alquiler Speed Racer, and the experience couldn’t have been better. The owner was super friendly, transparent, and professional, which is a big plus in a destination where prices often depend on how “touristy” you look.
We negotiated a price of 180,000 COP for the entire day (about 40 €) for two people.
The mulita was in excellent condition: clean, comfortable, and powerful enough to tour the whole island without issues.
Keep in mind:
- Gasoline is not included.
- A refundable deposit of 100,000 COP is required (returned with no issues).
- We spent only 10,000 COP on gasoline (≈ 2.3 €) for the entire island at a relaxed pace. Extremely cheap.

Tip: Tell them you’re coming from HSH Travels — they might give you a better price 😉.
Tips for renting a car or scooter in San Andrés
Here are the most important things to keep in mind:
- Check the vehicle’s condition before leaving: lights, brakes, tires, etc. Take photos or videos to avoid issues later.
- Ask for the vehicle documentation: Police stopped us during a checkpoint and asked for our license and the vehicle papers.
- Ask for a receipt for the deposit taken at pickup.
- Always try to negotiate the price, especially in low season.
- Refuel before returning: It’s cheaper than having the owner refill it.
- Drive carefully: Roads can be narrow and bumpy. Respect speed limits and watch for pedestrians and other vehicles.
- Enjoy the ride: San Andrés is an amazing island with dreamy beaches and unique views. Take advantage of the freedom that comes with having your own vehicle.
That’s all! I hope this guide helps you rent a car or scooter in San Andrés without issues and enjoy your trip to this beautiful Colombian island.
