Padrón Registration in Spain for Foreigners: Documents, Requirements & Step-by-Step Guide

Practical guide to register for the padrón in Spain

In Spain, dealing with administration can be a headache, and registering for the padrón is no exception. In this blog, we’ll explain how to do it step by step, what documents you need, and how to complete the process in person or online if you’re a foreigner. The padrón is an official register of people residing in a specific locality and is necessary to obtain your NIE, for school enrollment, or to access certain benefits. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register, whether you’re a homeowner or tenant.

1. How to Book an Appointment for the Padrón in Spain

You can book an appointment in several ways:

  1. By phone:
    • From Spain: call 010 (or your city council’s local number).
    • From abroad: +34 914 800 010.
  2. Online:

  1. If online or phone booking doesn’t work:
    • Go directly to a Citizen Service Office (OAC) first thing in the morning.
    • Even if they tell you there are no appointments, INSIST: there are often available slots on the spot. This was the only way I managed to get my padrón appointment in Madrid.

Tip: arrive 20 minutes early to your appointment to avoid rushing.

2. Required Documents for Padrón Registration (According to Your Case)

The documents depend on your situation in Spain. In all cases, you must fill out and bring this form:

2.1 Documents to Register as a Homeowner

You must provide:

  • Property deed or private purchase contract less than one year old, showing your name as the owner.
  • Inheritance acceptance deed, if it’s an inherited property.
  • Identity document (+ copy).

2.2 Documents to Register as a Tenant

You must provide:

  • Rental contract.
  • Rent receipt less than 6 months old.
  • Identity document (+ copy).

2.3 Documents to Register as Someone Living in Another Person’s Home

You must provide:

  • Authorization or registration certificate signed by the person you live with.
  • A bill with the address of the property owner’s residence.
  • Photocopy of the property owner’s identity document.
  • Your identity document (+ copy).
  • Padrón form (form indicated above).

In all cases, the property documents serve to verify your habitual residence.

3. On Appointment Day: What to Do to Register

  1. Arrive 20 minutes early at the office with your appointment and all necessary documents.
  2. Wait for your turn and submit the documents to the padrón official.
  3. Answer any questions they may have and sign the documents they request. The process takes about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Done! You’ll receive your padrón registration certificate on the spot, which you’ll need for other procedures (NIE, healthcare, school enrollment, administrative procedures, etc.).

4. Tips for a Smooth Padrón Registration

  • Double-check your documents before going to avoid problems.
  • Allow extra time and, if possible, go first thing in the morning. Officials are usually more available.
  • Keep copies of everything. And always bring an extra copy of your documents just in case.
  • If you can’t find an appointment, try another office or go directly in the morning.

Good luck with your padrón! It can be a bit tedious, but with good preparation, everything will go smoothly. ✨
